Pawnd was written during a wildfire and has been running since. The work ahead is about turning something that worked here into something any area can stand up.

Groups

The board is being reorganised around groups, the same concept every project under the umbrella uses. The current deployment becomes one group, and whoever installs an instance decides what a group means: a municipality, a valley, an association.

A group here is public and porous, which is the opposite of what it means in the colony application. Animals get lost across municipal boundaries, so a group refines the board rather than walling it off.

Next

A directory, not just a board

Once there are groups, the root page lists the active ones. That is what turns a single board into a directory: somebody searching near a boundary sees the neighbouring groups instead of having to already know which board to open.

Searching reaches across neighbouring groups for the same reason. The person who found the animal does not know where the boundary is either.

Later

Federation between instances

The directory solves animals crossing groups inside one instance. The next boundary is animals crossing between instances, once more than one organisation runs a board of its own.

This is explicitly not being built yet. There is one instance, so federating would solve a problem nobody has. What is being done now is the cheap part: giving groups stable public identifiers and not assuming every group lives in the same database, so the door stays open.
